1 in 14 women still smokes while pregnant, CDC says

About one in 14 pregnant women who gave birth in the United States in 2016 smoked cigarettes during her pregnancy, according to a report released Wednesday. The findings, gathered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s  National Center for Health Statistics , revealed that 7.2% of all expectant mothers smoked — but that the percentage of pregnant smokers varied widely from state to state. The prevalence of smoking was highest in West Virginia, where 25.1% of women reported smoking at any time during pregnancy, and lowest in California, where 1.6% reported smoking. “Despite the well-understood risk to mother and child, still, about one of every 14 women in the United States smoked during pregnancy,” said Patrick Drake, senior author of the report and a demographer at the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics. “These levels do vary widely by state, maternal age, race and Hispanic origin, and education, but any amount of smoking during pregnancy is too much,” he sai

Rubio’s Approval Rating Hits All-Time Low After He Participates In CNN’s Gun Control Town Hall

Republican Sen. Marco Rubio is at an all-time low with Florida voters following his participation in CNN’s televised town hall with Parkland shooting survivors, while Florida Gov. Rick Scott, who chose not to attend, is at an all-time high. Both Republicans have backed gun control measures in the wake of the shooting that left 17 students and staff dead. But a Quinnipiac poll conducted a few days after CNN’s town hall suggests Scott made the right call not to participate in the heated event. Rubio’s approval rating hit an all-time low, while Scott’s approval rating hit an all-time high. Scott is considering challenging Democrat Sen. Bill Nelson for his Senate seat in the 2018 midterm election. The governor has a seven-year history of negative approval ratings, but won approval from 49 percent of voters in the latest poll. That’s by far his highest rating ever. Rubio, on the other hand, is at an all-time low, with an approval rating of just 38 percent. That’s down sharply from his

Twitter rolls out private bookmark feature for tweets

Twitter is finally adding a feature its most devoted users have wanted for years. Starting Wednesday, users will be able to privately bookmark tweets to save and read later. Until now, the easiest way to save a tweet was to Like it by tapping on the heart icon beneath a tweet. Other users would email or text links to store on another platform. But that was inconvenient for two reasons: People can see public Likes and some perceive the action as explicitly an endorsement, rather than a bookmarking tool. Bookmarks will be private, and no one will know what you saved   to read later. Public Likes have sometimes raised controversy over the years, especially for high-profile figures. Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s account liked a pornographic tweet, which subsequently went viral. Cruz later  said  he was not responsible for the Like. Related: Twitter has a new reason for why it didn’t delete Trump’s anti-Muslim retweets Bookmarks will be stored in the order they were saved, unlike Twitter

Japan police confirm arrest of US man over dismembered body

TOKYO — Japanese police confirmed Thursday the arrest of an American on suspicion of dismembering and abandoning the body of a woman in western Japan. Hyogo prefectural police said Yevgeniy Vasilievich Bayraktar was arrested Feb. 22 on suspicion of confining the woman, who had been missing for six days. Police said they added allegations Wednesday of dismembering and abandoning the body. They are also investigating if the suspect killed the woman. Police would not release the suspect’s hometown, saying they are still verifying it. Japanese media reports say he is from Long Island, NY. Police said they found the severed head of the woman, a 27-year-old office worker from Sanda City, in the suspect’s lodging in Osaka last week. They found other body parts on Sunday in the mountains of Osaka and Kyoto after the suspect identified where he abandoned them, police said. An examination of those parts is still underway. Japanese media reports say the suspect met the woman on an internet d

Pizza Hut replaces Papa John’s as the NFL’s official sponsor

Pizza Hut will replace Papa John’s as the official pizza of the NFL. The announcement comes a day after Papa John’s said it would end its sponsorship of the league. Papa John’s, which last fall  blamed the NFL’s response to player protests  for slumping sales, will focus on its partnerships with individual teams. The league’s deal with Pizza Hut is for four years, and is worth more than the Papa John’s deal, a source familiar with the agreement told CNN. The agreement gives Pizza Hut, which is owned by Yum Brands, an array of exclusive marketing rights. “We are thrilled to have Pizza Hut, an industry leader and one of America’s favorite brands, as an official league sponsor,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. Related: Papa John’s is ending its NFL sponsorship The sponsorship will roll out with the upcoming NFL Draft in April. ‘Atlas of Beer’ surveys beer culture around the world

Think of beer and you may think of Irish pubs or Germany’s Oktoberfest. But a National Geographic book called the “Atlas of Beer” surveys beer across six continents, from banana beer in Tanzania to beer made in wine barrels in Argentina. Authors Mark W. Patterson and Nancy Hoalst-Pullen talked about global beer culture in this week’s  AP Travel podcast “Get Outta Here!” They noted that the Irish diaspora helped spread Irish pub culture around the world, but there’s actually a company that will ship an entire Irish pub to your doorstep for assembly. As for the United States, the authors say great craft beer and microbrewery destinations include San Diego; San Francisco; Portland, Oregon; Portland, Maine; Ohio; Michigan; Indiana; Asheville, North Carolina; Texas; and Denver.

Wisconsin DNR board approves Kohler golf course land swap

MADISON — The state Department of Natural Resources board has approved handing over a parcel of state park land to help the Kohler Company build a new golf course. The company wants to build a 247-acre golf course adjacent to Kohler-Andrae State Park in Sheboygan County. The company is looking to acquire about 6.5 acres within the park to accommodate a maintenance facility for the course. Kohler in exchange has offered the DNR about 9.5 acres adjacent to the park and promised to upgrade the park entrance. Park users urged the board to reject the deal, saying the maintenance facility would ruin the park’s ambiance and giving state park land to a private company would set a dangerous precedent. The board still voted unanimously to approve the swap.

Dog shot, hit with hammer and left to die in ditch rescued

FARMINGTON, MO — Trooper, a yellow lab, has earned his name. Animal rescuers said they believe he was shot, beaten with a hammer and left for dead in brush near Farmington in St. Francois County, Missouri. “They said he was literally suctioned to the ground he had been here so long, it was almost like lifting a carcass up,” said animal rescue volunteer Katrina Campbell. Campbell said people driving by noticed the dog lift his head up. They brought him back food and water and realized he couldn’t move. She then reached out on social media for help. They believe Trooper laid there for weeks in his own urine and feces which burned his skin. “I was like just give me a sign you’re not giving up yet,” Campbell remembers asking Trooper. “He lifted his head and he licked me on my cheek and I said I’m going to fight for you,” she added. Catholic priest accused of kidnapping, confinement and domestic battery of wife

Gambar
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A Catholic priest in Indianapolis is facing several charges after allegedly assaulting his wife in September of 2017. Father Luke W. Reese, 49, assaulted the woman after he found out she was having an affair , according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by WXIN on Tuesday. In the court document, the victim claims she was in the backseat of a vehicle with the man when Reese arrived and told her to get out. In the document, the wife says Reese then drove them around the city as he hit her and blasted heavy metal music. The two then went to the Holy Rosary Catholic Church of Indianapolis, where the woman claims Reese made her kneel at the altar, said he could choke her, slammed her into a wall and hit her head against their vehicle before leaving, the affidavit says. Reese then reportedly drove his wife to Auburn to “make her tell her 90-something-year-old grandmother what she had done by talking to another man.” When the couple got home, the woman claims Re

Joseph Jakubowski to be sentenced following conviction on gun theft charges in Janesville

Gambar
JANESVILLE — Joseph Jakubowski, the man who sparked a statewide manhunt last spring, will be sentenced on Wednesday, Feb. 28 in the wake of his January conviction on three charges associated with the theft of guns from Armageddon Supplies in Janesville. FOX6 News plans to stream Jakubowski’s sentencing on FOX6Now.com as well as the FOX6 News Milwaukee Facebook page . Jakubowski was previously sentenced to serve 14 years in prison on federal charges. The question now is whether Jakubowski will serve his state and federal sentences concurrently (at the same time) or consecutively (one after the other.) Jakubowski’s lawyer, Michael Murphy has indicated he’ll argue for Jakubowski to serve his sentences concurrently and in state prison and opposed to a federal penitentiary. The break-in at the Janesville gun shop, along with the rambling manifesto Jakubowski sent to the White House last April, preceded a 10-day, statewide manhunt. It ended when police captured Jakubowski on a farm in Ve

Foxconn plant could reduce road funding for state projects by $90 million

MADISON — Funding for state road projects could be reduced as much as $90 million by mid-2019 in order to pay for roadwork related to the $10 billion Foxconn Technology Group plant in southeast Wisconsin. That’s the determination of the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau in a memo sent to Democratic lawmakers that they released Wednesday. Assembly Democratic Minority Leader Gordon Hintz says the memo shows that Republican Gov. Scott Walker is prioritizing the Foxconn project over repairing roads elsewhere in the state. The reduction to pay for roads around the massive Foxconn project is expected to leave the state highway fund as much as $870 million short of the $2.4 billion the state Department of Transportation state was needed to maintain road conditions for the next decade. The Foxconn plant to make liquid-crystal display screens is expected to employ up to 13,000 people.

Wisconsin Supreme Court deals blow to union elections

MILWAUKEE — Wisconsin’s Supreme Court says an administrative agency overseeing employee union elections has the power to decertify collective bargaining groups if they don’t file election paperwork on time. The decision Wednesday reverses lower court rulings that sided with the unions’ argument that the Employee Relations Commission overstepped its authority when it proceeded with decertification. The groups missed the deadline by an hour. The Act 10 state law requires annual recertification elections for state and municipal employees. The commission’s rules require filing for recertification by the end of business on Sept. 15. The unions involved in the case are: The Wisconsin Association of State Prosecutors, representing assistant district attorneys, and the Service Employees International Union Local 150, representing food service and custodians in Milwaukee Public Schools and the St. Francis School District.

Paul Manafort pleads not guilty, gets September trial date

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort maintained his innocence on Wednesday to new charges he acted as an unregistered foreign agent and directed an international money-laundering conspiracy. Manafort appeared at the federal courthouse and entered a formal plea of not guilty to a second indictment brought against him by prosecutors working for special counsel Robert Mueller. It was his first court appearance since his co-defendant and longtime business associate, Rick Gates, pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors. Manafort had previously pleaded not guilty in the case, but the latest indictment, which mirrored the charges filed against him last October, required him to formally enter a second plea. During the hearing, Judge Amy Berman Jackson set a Sept. 17 trial date for Manafort and reprimanded him for making a public statement last week about Gates’ plea. The statement violated a gag order she put in place early in the case,

Billy Graham will be only the 4th private citizen to lie in honor at the Capitol

Gambar
Congressional leadership  announced last week  that it would commemorate the life of evangelist Billy Graham by having him lie in honor this Wednesday, a rare accolade for any American and an official embrace of the religious leader from the halls of government. Graham will be only the fourth private citizen to lie in honor, following civil rights icon Rosa Parks in 2005 and two slain Capitol Police officers in 1998, the Architect of the Capitol’s  records  say. The practice is similar to lying in state, where the casket of a government or military official is honored with brief placement in a government building. Former presidents, as well as some lawmakers and other officials, have lain in state at the Capitol Rotunda, and Supreme Court justices have lain in repose at the Supreme Court building, a tradition that  continued  with the death of Justice Antonin Scalia two years ago. Reverend Billy Graham, 99, passed away on Wednesday, morning at 8:00am at his home in Montreat, North

Mom brings miscarried embryo to city council meeting, blames public housing conditions

RICHMOND, Va. - A woman’s emotional plea to the Richmond City Council this week has motivated others to ask  what can be done to help people living in deteriorating, infested apartments in Richmond’s public housing. On Monday, Sharanda Taylor told the council that she believes her living conditions are taking a toll on her mental and physical health. She shared very emotional and deeply personal information with city council members during the public comment period, hoping to remind the city of how much work is left to do. She said there was no heat in her RRHA apartment and that her home was once overrun and infested with mice, according to WTVR. “I was housed like an animal and left in the apartment for three months knowing that I had an infestation,” she said. The mom told the council that conditions were so bad, she and her children had to relocate to a hotel. Taylor said she believes a miscarriage she had was tied to the stress caused by the difficult living conditions she a

Argument leads to woman running over boyfriend on train tracks, police say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — "That's crazy. I don't think my sister did it, though." That's what Jessica Coleman said when told that her older sister Roshonique Coleman was accused of hurting her boyfriend. "They probably got into a fight, but she is not going to run him over," she told WREG. But a truck driver who stopped at railroad tracks on Warford Monday afternoon says that's exactly what happened. When police arrived, they say Tavari Golden was 150 yards down the tracks on the ground with Coleman kneeling over him. The truck driver told officers he saw a car follow Goldman down the tracks, hit him from behind, drive over him and keep going. That victim told police he and his girlfriend, Roshonique Coleman, got into a fight while driving South on Warford. He says he got out of the vehicle and walked down the tracks. That's when Coleman got into the driver's seat, drove onto the tracks and ran him down. In 2016, Coleman was accused of threate

Massive 16-foot, 3,000-pound great white shark caught off Hilton Head Island

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - A massive great white shark was caught off the coast of Hilton Head Island last week, WSAV reports . Charter Captain Chip Michalove, who owns Outcast Sport Fishing, was working shorthanded when he made the incredible catch. "At 4:30 in the morning, I got a text message from two of my crew members saying they were sick," he said. "So it was just me and one other guy and I was thinking, 'Maybe we should just postpone it to another day.'" A 10-foot great white shark passed by the boat without being hooked and Michalove said he was just about to give up. Then he hooked a 3,000-pound , 16-foot great white shark. “A 3,000-pound animal is massive. People don’t realize just one wag of the tail can pool a 26-foot boat at that kind of clip,” he said. Michalove had to call a nearby boat for backup. The team pulled the shark to the side of the boat, tagged it and set it free. “She kind of knew, 'I’m the boss of the ocean and there’

If Your Ex Only Comes Back For You When You’re a Finalist on ‘The Bachelor,’ He’s Not That Into You

This is a public service announcement. I was unable to commit to “The Bachelor” this season, but because I have so very many friends who did, I nonetheless know exactly what is happening with Arie Luyendyk, Jr. the somewhat lackluster silver fox race car driver for whose heart some 20 women of not very diverse hair color are vying. Along with our freedom, rock ’n’ roll, and almost limitless flavors of potato chips, this is one of the big perks of living in America these days. In the penultimate episode of this season’s women winnowing ( not counting the “Women Tell All” ) an ex comes back! Oh, yes, Chris Harrison has tricks up his sleeve as usual, and this time it is the possibly burgeoning love of Arie and Becca K. that will be tested. Arie and the gang are in Peru, whose tourist board has no doubt paid dearly to have these basic, attractive Americans weep openly against the backdrop of its stunning vistas. But it’s not just the members of the “Bachelor” cast and crew who make it t

Jewish Americans Deserve Better Than The ADL

Anti-Semitism is a serious, albeit relatively small, problem in American life. Still, it’s a shame that the folks at the Anti-Defamation League, self-styled spokespeople of we Jews, are in the business of exaggerating threats when it serves their partisan interests and underplaying threats when they do not. The ADL’s most recent study on rising anti-Semitism was, as always, carried by a number of media outlets. “Antisemitic incidents in US soar to highest level in two decades,” read one headline  atop a picture of angry Tiki-torch Nazis in Charlottesville. “Largest year-on-year increase since 1979 comes as Trump administration is accused of failing to condemn bigotry.” Anti-Semitism isn’t “soaring” in America, and the ADL knows it.  Among 330 or-so million Americans, the ADL notes that there were 1,986 anti-Semitic reported incidents across the United States in 2017. That’s a 57 percent increase over the 1,267 reported incidents in 2016. Yet the ADL admits a part of the spike was dr
