‘Your buddy wants to be by your side:’ WHS, MADACC team up to discourage lengthy tethering of dogs outside

MILWAUKEE — Officials with the Wisconsin Humane Society and Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission are teaming up to encourage you to bring your pets inside, and limit the amount of time dogs are tied up outside by their owners. According to a news release from these animal advocates, having dogs tied up outdoors for a few hours can be great, but according to animal welfare experts, dogs tied outside alone for the majority of the day are at risk of injury, depression, aggression and psychological issues. “Dogs are highly social and intelligent animals that need to be with their people. Although not everyone can have a fence where they live, using a tether for long periods of time is not only depressing and frustrating for a dog, but dangerous to their health and well-being,” said Karen Sparapani, executive director at MADACC in the release. Facebook wants to make changing your privacy settings less work

Facebook is supposed to be a fun way to waste some time, but taking a break from “liking” status updates to customize your privacy settings is a chore. The company knows its controls need work, and it’s trying to fix them with   site design changes and a staff re-organization. “[One of] the positive side effects of the past few months, and all the news around Cambridge Analytica, has been that people are actually interested in and want to go learn about the controls,” said Facebook’s David Baser. The company aims to raise awareness of its controls — many of which users don’t know exist. During CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s testimony in front of Congress last month, some US senators, including Senator John Kennedy, seemed surprised to learn what settings were available to users. Baser is in charge of the company’s new centralized privacy team that will oversee and standardize privacy and data use across the social network. The department is hiring hundreds of engineers. Its debut proje...

Hawaii lava finally reaches the Pacific — only to create another deadly danger

Watch Video First it was  catastrophic lava . Then it was  sulfur dioxide . Now Big Island residents have yet another danger to worry about. Laze — a mashup of “lava” and “haze” — is a nasty product formed when hot lava hits the ocean, sending hydrochloric acid and volcanic glass particles into the air. And now it’s a real threat after lava crossed Highway 137 late Saturday night and entered the Pacific Ocean, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said. Laze can cause lung, eye and skin irritation. And it has proven deadly in the past. “This hot, corrosive gas mixture caused two deaths immediately adjacent to the coastal entry point in 2000, when seawater washed across recent and active lava flows,” the  HVO said . Officials are warning people to stay away from areas where lava meets the ocean. But further inland, residents have other problems. The HVO also reported sulfur dioxide emissions have tripled. Because of lava entering the ocean, the US Coast Guard enforced a...

FYI: English isn’t the official language of the United States

Aaron Schlossberg, a lawyer in New York, was the subject of a viral video last week after he was caught on camera berating staff members of a restaurant for speaking Spanish with customers. It might be news to him that nothing in the Constitution or any federal law supports his comment that "they should be speaking English" because "this is America." A lot of multilingual countries promote an official language, but the United States has never done so with English. In fact, the U.S. has no official language. "The Founding Fathers didn't see a need to declare one," Dr. Wayne Wright, a professor of language and literacy at Purdue University, told CNN. "English was pretty much the dominant language of the United States at the time so there really wasn't a need to protect it. And they didn't want to offend their fellow Americans who helped fight for independence." People in this country have been speaking languages other than English...
