Essential winter driving tips

Gambar
Jack Frost nipping at our noses can also mean treacherous driving conditions. Your best bet in wintery weather is to stay off the road. But if you have to get behind the wheel, Consumer Reports has some essential driving tips which can help keep you and your loved ones safe. Remember in winter weather any action you take while driving will take longer. So tip number one is slow down and leave about twice the distance you normally would between you and the car in front of you. This will give you more time to react if things go wrong. So be deliberate and slow. Take more time to steer or put on the brakes.  A good rule of thumb - pretend there’s a hot cup of coffee on the dash that you’re trying not to spill. Also, remember that while 4-wheel drive can help get your car going in the snow, it has no added benefit while stopping -- that’s where anti-lock brakes come in. They will stop the car sooner while also allowing you to steer. You’ll know they are working when they start to pu...

MILWAUKEE — The six-time champion Milwaukee Wave defeated the rival Kansas City Comets Sunday evening, December 31st in the traditional New Year’s Eve game at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena 6-4. “It was a tough game from start to finish,” said Head Coach Giuliano Oliviero. “You’ve got to give credit to the Comets for bringing a lot of fight into this game, which was unexpected, but we found a way to win. That’s what good teams do and we want to keep that momentum going into our home (Saturday) and away (Friday) series next week with Cedar Rapids.” With Sunday’s win, the 17-18 Milwaukee Wave team surpasses the ’08/’09 Wave team for most wins in a row to start the season with 10, which Coach Oliviero and Assistant Coach Fontana we’re part of. “Sure we are 10-0 and that’s exciting, but we still have some room to grow,” said Oliviero. “There were moments (Sunday) night where we were fantastic and other moments where we’ll need to improve, but to be sitting in first place and not ev...

Peter Rettler WEST BEND — Some years back, a West Bend man, intent on losing a little weight, settled on a very ambitious New Year’s resolution. He not only achieved his goal of running every single day for 24 years, but now, he runs for more than just himself. New Year’s resolutions can come and go, but Peter Rettler really kept it going! A few years back, Rettler, who was a wrestler in high school and college, figured a New Year’s resolution would help him and a former teammate lose weight. “We were like, ‘God, we felt so much better when we were down to our wrestling weight,’ and we made a resolution that we were going to run every single day in 1994 and that’s how it started,” Rettler said. Twenty-four years later, it hasn’t stopped. Just ask his wife of 25 years! “It’s been tricky at times — trying to get things in like childbirth,” she said. Or, the occasional visit to the emergency room. “Kidney stones. I had two Kidney stones and I asked the doctor ‘can I go for a run...

“Button is on my table:” Kim Jong Un says US should know North Korean nuclear force a reality

TOKYO — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said Monday the United States should be aware that his country’s nuclear forces are now a reality, not a threat. But he also struck a conciliatory tone in his New Year’s address, wishing success for the Winter Olympics set to begin in the South in February and suggesting the North may send a delegation to participate. Kim, wearing a Western-style gray suit and tie, said in his customary annual address his country had achieved the historic feat of “completing” its nuclear forces and added he has a nuclear button on his desk. “The U.S. should know that the button for nuclear weapons is on my table,” he said during the speech, as provisionally translated by the AP. The official transcript of his address was expected to be released shortly. “The entire area of the U.S. mainland is within our nuclear strike range. … The United States can never start a war against me and our country.” Kim also called for improved relations with the South, an idea me...

SCOTUS Chief Justice Roberts: Judiciary will review sexual misconduct policies

WASHINGTON — Chief Justice John Roberts used his annual report on the federal judiciary Sunday to promise a careful evaluation of its sexual misconduct policies and to highlight the work of court employees following the year’s destructive hurricanes. Roberts touched only briefly on the issue of workplace sexual misconduct, which has in recent months brought down men in entertainment, politics and the media. In December, prominent federal appeals court judge Alex Kozinski retired following accusations by women that he had touched them inappropriately, made lewd comments and shown them pornography. “Events in recent months have illuminated the depth of the problem of sexual harassment in the workplace, and events in the past few weeks have made clear that the judicial branch is not immune,” Roberts wrote, without mentioning Kozinski by name. Roberts had previously asked that a working group examine the judiciary’s workplace conduct policies, with a report expected by May 1. Roberts wr...

LOS ANGELES — On the last day of the calendar year, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” has surpassed “Beauty and the Beast” as the top grossing film in North America in 2017. It also topped the charts for the weekend for the third time, but just barely — Dwayne Johnson’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” is close on its tail. According to studio estimates on Sunday, “The Last Jedi” will add $52.4 million over the weekend bringing its domestic total to $517.1 million. “Beauty and the Beast,” also a Disney release, netted out with $504 million for the year. With the weekend’s earnings, “The Last Jedi” will also cross the $1 billion mark globally — even before it opens in China on Jan. 5. But “Star Wars” is facing some hefty competition still, from the likes of The Rock, Jack Black and Kevin Hart, whose “Jumanji” sequel took in $50.6 million in its second weekend in theaters to take second place. The Columbia Pictures film has earned a stunning $169.8 million to date and could even reach $300 m...

Wisconsin to end pesticide spraying program

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin is reducing its efforts to slow the spread of the leaf-eating gypsy moth by preparing to end a program that helps fight localized outbreaks in already infested parts of the state. The state Department of Natural Resources is ending the aerial pesticide spraying program because of a decline in requests from local communities and because of growing private-sector alternatives to federally subsidized spraying. The program was available in 50 infested eastern counties, the  Wisconsin State Journal reported  . Just two counties requested spraying under the department’s program this year. The department doesn’t specify when the program would end but said the state could continue the program to suppress gypsy moths on state land. “We expect that business opportunities for local aerial applicators and arborists may increase with the deactivation of the state gypsy moth suppression program,” the department said. Ending the gypsy moth program will also all...

Powerball and Mega Millions now total $783 million

The lottery jackpot numbers just keep climbing. There were no winners in Saturday night’s Powerball drawing, so the grand prize in that game has now reached $440 million ahead of another drawing Wednesday. The Mega Millions jackpot is no slouch, either. At the next drawing Tuesday, lottery players will have a shot to snag $343 million. The combined total for those two prizes: $783 million. It’s rare for the jackpots in both games to get so big. But it’s about to become more common. Both Mega Millions and Powerball have been changed to make the odds of winning the jackpot longer, meaning there will be more frequent giant jackpots. In October, Mega Millions  changed the numbers  from which players can choose, bringing the odds of picking all six numbers to 1 in 302.6 million, from 1 in 258.9 million under the old format. Iranian Protests Offer Opportunity For A Real U.S. Reset In The Middle East

Over the past four days, Iranians have taken to the streets in several cities to protest corruption and living conditions in the repressive Islamic Republic. The unusual public protest of the Iranian regime has provoked a predictable government crackdown. While protests in Iran are rare, they aren’t unprecedented. However, this time, unlike in 2009, the White House is poised to support the protesters, not leave them in the lurch. Demonstrations began in the northeastern city of Mashhad on Thursday, and quickly spread to several other cities on Friday. They began over high prices, but now protestors are calling for the ouster of Tehran’s powerful clerical class, and speaking out against police beatings and other government abuses. Ironically, the protests began just two days before previously scheduled pro-government rallies that took place on Saturday, meant to mark the eight-year anniversary of the 2009 Green Movement protests that the Iranian regime harshly suppressed. Much like t...

2 protesters in Iran killed as social media apps blocked

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran on Sunday blocked access to Instagram and a popular messaging app used by activists to organize and publicize the protests now roiling the Islamic Republic, as authorities said two demonstrators had been killed overnight in the first deaths attributed to the rallies. The demonstrations, which began Thursday over the economic woes plaguing Iran and continued Sunday, appear to be the largest to strike the Islamic Republic since the protests that followed the country’s disputed 2009 presidential election. They were fanned in part by messages sent on the Telegram messaging app, which authorities blocked Sunday along with the photo-sharing app Instagram, which is owned by tech giant Facebook. Many in Iran are learning about the protests and sharing images of them through Telegram, a mobile phone messaging app popular among the country’s 80 million people. On Saturday, Telegram shut down one channel on the service over Iranian allegations it encouraged violence, someth...

All Of Melania Trump’s 2017 Coats, Ranked

Gambar
If there’s one thing I’ve learned about First Lady Melania Trump since her husband was elected president, it’s that she can wear the hell out of a coat. Dramatic, functional, militaristic, sporty, tailored, avant garde—she covers a lot of ground with her coverings. She wears a coat so well, she doesn’t even need to use the sleeves half the time, and she still rocks them better than most. For the purposes of this list, I’ve eliminated blazers and skirt-suit jackets from consideration, even when they’re really cool. Honorable mentions in that category go to this wild Altuzarra number she wore to meet the President and First Lady of Argentina , the bold choice of a Michael Kors tuxedo jacket for the Joint Session of Congress in January, and this gorgeous Ralph Lauren menswear look FLOTUS wore to host her Canadian counterpart, Sophie Trudeau. But on to the big coats. And there are plenty. All the coats are posted at @1600slay under #FLOTUScoats. 28. Funky Fendi in Japan This one fell...
