This Week In Weird Twitter, Volume 115

Elon Musk is a chump. Sure, he makes electric cars and rockets, and launches electric cars into space on rockets, but he doesn’t go into true uncharted territory and try to make science fiction into science fact. Even the whole tunnel thing he talks about is just a rerun of ideas from days of old. The same is true for the personal flame throwers one of his companies released. Anyone could make a flame thrower, you just need some fire and something to throw it with, like a catapult. To be a true next-generation supervillain, you have to step up your game. Stop thinking of the present and think about the future instead. What’s the next step for billionaire inventors who want to score some government funds? It’s not electric cars and rockets, it’s building a parallel universe then launching cars into space from it. And you, yes you!, are just the person to do it. But first, you’ll need a robot army. You’ll probably also need some other things, like a team of scientists and a bunch of m...

Neil Simon’s Gentle Humor Will Be Sorely Missed

Herman Mankiewicz, the alcoholic and gambling-addicted screenwriter (at the very least, he co-wrote “Citizen Kane”) once gave advice to his daughter on how to cope with life: try to find humor in any situation. Neil Simon, who died this week, practiced this type of coping skill. Born to an impoverished dysfunctional family during the Great Depression, Simon turned to humor as a way to block out his unhappiness: “I think part of what made me a comedy writer is the blocking out of some of the really ugly, painful things in my childhood and covering it up with a humorous attitude … do something to laugh until I was able to forget what was hurting.” Even when working for the temperamental Sid Caesar on the 1950s “Show of Shows,” Simon found happiness, because of the camaraderie he developed with the writing staff: There were about seven writers, plus Sid,  Carl Reiner , and  Howie Morris  … Mel Brooks and maybe  Woody Allen  would write one of the other ske...

It’s not about the parish priests. It’s about the bishops. It’s about the cardinals. It’s about the Pope,” Zauzmer said. “This anger is saying, ‘You were in leadership back then. You’re still in leadership now, and you haven’t changed enough.'” Listen to the full episode here:

Explosive Ivy League Study Repressed For Finding Transgender Kids May Be A Social Contagion

Gambar
“Rapid-onset gender dysphoria” among teens and young adults may be a social contagion linked with having friends who identify as LGBT, an identity politics peer culture, and an increase in internet use, finds a study out this month from a Brown University professor. The study was quickly yanked from Brown’s news releases after a transgender activist feeding frenzy, and the journal it was published in is reconsidering the publication. There is a parent and researcher-driven petition to stand behind the publication of the first study to look in detail at rapid-onset gender dysphoria. The petition includes the following graph about gender referrals in the United Kingdom. Anecdotal and news reports , as well as the rapid recent growth in transgender treatment centers , indicates a similar phenomenon inside the United States. “[T]he parental reports in this study offer important and much-needed preliminary information about a cohort of adolescents, mostly girls, who with no prior histor...

Here’s What You Need To Know About Trump’s Proposed Trade Deal With Mexico

U.S. stock markets surged Monday after President Trump announced the United States and Mexico have reached a preliminary trade agreement, which is part of the Trump administration’s effort to rewrite the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Does this mean the new deal is a “huge” improvement over NAFTA? Not exactly. President Trump has called NAFTA the “worst” trade deal in history, but an analysis of key  provisions finds limited improvements, some compromises, and quite a few flaws in this new agreement. The biggest improvement is with respect to digital trade, something missing from the NAFTA agreement established in 1990, when e-commerce was in its infant stage and few even knew what social media was. The new agreement stipulates “ digital trade tariffs will be prohibited for digital products that are distributed electronically, such as e-books, videos, music, software and games .” Another improvement is on intellectual property rights. The new agreement states ...

California Considers Bill To Make Public Universities Offer Students Abortion Pills

California is on its way to becoming the first state to mandate that public colleges make abortion pills available to students. SB 320, which is the first bill of its kind, passed the state senate last year, and the state house plans to vote on the bill by the end of the month. Activists herald this likely victory as progress. “[Abortion] is a good thing,” recently-graduated activist Adiba Khan told Bustle . “Anything that allows you to make a better decision about your own life, we consider to be a good thing.” From a libertarian perspective, I certainly agree that protecting autonomy from state intrusion is worth celebrating. But is abortion? “This movement is about de-stigmatizing abortion,” Khan added, echoing her earlier praise for the procedure. She’s right that offering easy-to-obtain abortion pills (like Mifepristone and Misoprostol) at student health clinics across the state would remove barriers to access, thus creating more abortions. So SB 320 would destigmatize abort...

In ‘All Happy Families,’ Jeanne McCulloch Tries To Learn From A Family Full Of Bad Marriages

After the immense success of Jeanette Walls’ The Glass Castle , the market seems hungry for stories of growing up in difficult situations. Although All Happy Families by Jeanne McCulloch, former managing editor of The Paris Review, tempts the reader into believing the story will center on the hardship of having complicated parents and trying to maneuver in the upper echelon of society, in this memoir McCulloch hesitates and instead examines marriage and commitment while grappling with the details of her childhood. The book’s simple three-part structure begins on the threshold of McCulloch’s own marriage, taking place at the family home in the Hamptons. In an effort to deal with her alcoholic husband, McCulloch’s mother forces her alcoholic husband to quit drinking cold turkey, forcing his hospitalization. Her mother tells the hospital not to call during the wedding. She doesn’t want the distraction for her daughter’s big day. The book could not be considered linear by any means, as ...

The Mob Hounding OSU Over Domestic Assault Claims Are Destroying Due Process

If the media crusade against domestic violence in sports can teach us anything, it is perhaps to re-emphasize the genius of the Founders in emphasizing that due process is more important than outcome — and enshrining that concept in our Constitution. The idea may seem cold to a family watching the killer of a loved one walk after being acquitted. As someone whose family members were harassed by stalkers, I know the inefficiency of our judicial system can be unbelievably slow and frustrating. But in a free society, people accused of a crime must have the ability to defend themselves and, when falsely accused, reclaim their good name. That can only happen if we allow the guilty the same opportunity, which is why process is more important than specific outcomes. The frenzy surrounding allegations of abuse by a coach in Ohio State University’s football program is a prime example of what happens when we decide that if the courts won’t punish that SOB, why, we’ll just do it ourselves to fo...

Why Government Regulation Will Only Make Google And Facebook’s Bias Worse

Forty years ago, a movie titled “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” terrified audiences with visions of a dystopian world in which humans transformed into a collective hive of like-minded clones. I’m often asked how I can possibly defend the Trump administration or President Trump, since he has so many faults and says so many questionable things. It puts me in mind of that movie, because my answer generates the same kind of response. While eyes full of contempt collectively glare at our president, I have turned my gaze back on the mob. I hate mobs, and I hate group think. And I see chilling evil taking place in the name of getting Trump. That’s why I oppose the angry and dangerous mob that’s arrayed against President Trump, regardless of who it aligns me with. Virtually every story written in media coverage of Trump is negative. Worse than that, the media acts as a single hive as the same talking points that all seem to be said at the same time by unthinking mouths from seemingly unconn...
