Milwaukee Admirals fall to Grand Rapids Griffins 6-2

MILWAUKEE — Freddy Gaudreau and Brandon Bollig scored the first two goals of the game to stake the Admirals to a 2-0 advantage, but Grand Rapids would score the next six as they defeated the Ads 6-2 on Saturday night at Panther Arena. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Milwaukee and dropped them seven points behind Rockford for the fourth and final playoff spot in the division. The Ads still have seven games remaining the regular season to make up the gap, while the IceHogs, who defeated San Jose tonight, have six. Gaudreau got the Admirals on the board just 1:59 into the game with his 20 th tally of the season. Stationed on the right post, Gaudreau took a Jimmy Oligny pass from the boards that snuck through a sea of legs and right to Gaudreau’s stick for an easy tap-in. Bollig made it 2-0 Milwaukee just over half-way through the second period. Tyler Moy skated behind the Grand Rapids net before stopping on a dime and dishing a backhand to Bollig, who had an easy tap-

Milwaukee couple hopes to find owner of WWII commendation letter discovered in old book

MILWAUKEE -- A treasure hidden in plain sight. A Milwaukee couple found World War II commendation letter inside an old book and now want to return it to its rightful owner. It's a book with a memorable message: There is no place like home. So when Mary Kay Villanueva found a treasure inside her copy of, "The Land of Oz" she knew the letter had to find its way back to its home. Mary Kay Villanueva "I thought well, maybe we should get this back to the original owner, a family member," said Mary Kay. Mary Kay, showed it to her husband, Richard, who immediately knew it was something special. It was a letter commending Leroy Buenger for excellent service in the line of his profession. It recognizes his actions during two battles between January and July of 1944. "His conduct gives evidence of great value to the naval service," said Richard. The book was from an old estate sale and Buenger is someone they have never known. Records show he was from

Thousands mistakenly enrolled during California’s Medicaid expansion, feds find

CALIFORNIA — California signed up an estimated 450,000 people under Medicaid expansion who may not have been eligible for coverage, according to a report by the U.S. Health and Human Services’ chief watchdog. In a Feb. 21 report, the HHS’ inspector general estimated that California spent $738.2 million on 366,078 expansion beneficiaries who were ineligible. It spent an additional $416.5 million for 79,055 expansion enrollees who were “potentially” ineligible, auditors found. Auditors said nearly 90% of the $1.15 billion in questionable payments involved federal money, while the rest came from the state’s Medicaid program, known as Medi-Cal. They examined a six-month period from Oct. 1, 2014, to March 31, 2015, when Medicaid payments of $6.2 billion were made related to 1.9 million newly eligible enrollees. There were limitations to the California review, however. The audit extrapolated from a sample of 150 beneficiaries. The authors reported a 90% confidence level in their results —

Officials seek clues in SUV cliff crash that likely killed 8

Watch Video SAN FRANCISCO — Accident-reconstruction investigators are trying to figure out what caused an SUV carrying a family to plunge off a California cliff in a deadly wreck that happened shortly after child-welfare authorities went to their home to investigate possible abuse. Five members of the Hart family — a free-spirited brood from Washington state who grew their own food and took up activist causes — were found dead. Searchers kept looking Friday for three more children believed to have been in the vehicle when it went over a scenic coastal overlook and landed on rocks in the Pacific Ocean below. The missing children may have been washed out to sea. “There are a lot of unknowns on this,” Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allman said. “Several of the questions that have been asked today will never be answered.” Allman said there is no reason so far to think the crash was intentional but also mentioned there were no skid marks or signs the driver braked as the GMC Yukon crossed

Pres. Trump launches new website to solicit opioid addiction stories

The White House is using a  new website  to collect and share stories from Americans about how they or someone they know overcame opioid addiction. The website invites visitors to “share your story below by uploading a video about how you overcame addiction, volunteered at a recovery center, or worked as a family to help a loved one get on the path to recovery.” Below that is a link to a form where individuals can upload their stories and an accompanying note. The website, which the President announced earlier this month, frames the issue as “the crisis next door.” It comes after Pres. Trump  said  his administration will push a  “large-scale” ad campaign  aimed at combating the opioid epidemic. The administration  is also proposing  stiffer penalties for high-intensity drug traffickers, including the death penalty for some. In a video statement, President Donald Trump says the crisis is all around, but that fact is too often forgotten. “Stigma, silence and a lack of information pr

US, UK soldiers killed in Syria blast identified

US and UK defense officials on Saturday released the names of the two troops who were killed this week in an improvised explosive device attack in the Manbij area of Syria. US Army Master Sgt. Jonathan Dunbar, 36, of Austin, Texas, and British soldier Sgt. Matt Tonroe died as a result of Thursday’s explosion, the defense officials said. Dunbar died Friday, a day after the blast, the Pentagon said. The UK Ministry of Defence has said Tonroe was embedded with US forces on a counter ISIS operation when the attack occurred. The explosion also injured five others,  the US-led coalition in Syria has said . The coalition said details about the incident are being withheld pending further investigation. Dunbar was assigned to the headquarters of US Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the Pentagon said. Tonroe was “deployed numerous times on operations to Afghanistan and the Middle East,” the UK ministry said. “His distinguished service reflected a man that was

Arnold Schwarzenegger in ‘good spirits’ after heart surgery

The 70-year-old “Terminator” actor and former California governor underwent a scheduled procedure to replace a valve on Thursday. His spokesman Daniel Ketchell says he played with one of his old action movie catchphrases when he regained consciousness and announced, “I’m back.” Ketchell said Saturday in an email Schwarzenegger “continues to be doing very well, in good spirits, and recovering.” The pulmonic valve originally was installed in 1997 for a congenital heart defect and had to be replaced. Schwarzenegger had a motorcycle crash that left him with several broken ribs in 2001. He had a hip replaced and rotator cuff surgery in 2003. He broke his right femur in a skiing accident in 2006.

Milwaukee native Arike Ogunbowale scores last-second shot in Notre Dame OT win against UConn

Ted Nugent: Parkland teens attacking the NRA have ‘no soul’

Rocker Ted Nugent says the Florida students calling for gun control have “no soul” and are “mushy brained children.” He made the comments Friday while defending the National Rifle Association as a guest on the Joe Pags Show, a nationally syndicated conservative radio program. Nugent, an NRA board member, said survivors of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School are wrong to blame the NRA for mass shootings. He went on to say that “the evidence is irrefutable, they have no soul,” and that the gun-control measures they support amount to “spiritual suicide.” A representative for the 69-year-old Nugent did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Stoneman Douglas senior Kyra Parrow says on Twitter that Nugent is “is being a 5 year old acting like a bully.”

Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Changes Definition Of ‘Assault Rifle’ After Parkland Shooting

Soon after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary changed its definition of “assault rifle.” The entry for “assault rifle,” which was updated March 31, 2018, reads as follows: noun:  any of various intermediate-range, magazine-fed military rifles (such as the AK-47) that can be set for automatic or semiautomatic fire;  also   :  a rifle that resembles a military assault rifle but is designed to allow only semiautomatic fire After 17 people were shot and killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February, activists have been using the tragic events to make the sale of so-called “assault weapons” illegal. An Internet archive search shows the Mirriam-Webster entry for “assault rifle” appears to be different now than it was before the shooting. A cached version of the same entry from June 13, 2016 has this definition: noun:  a gun that can shoot many bullets quickly and that is designed for use by the military “Assault weapon” and

Peeps Are The Most Disgusting Candy Ever And Need To Burn In Hades

Easter season is upon us, which means animal-shaped marshmallow candies are lining grocery store shelves and will soon be crammed into last-minute Easter baskets. This practice needs to be stopped. Peeps must be erased from Easter celebrations. Full stop. Do you like eating car wax? That’s what these pastel-colored monstrosities are made out of. Seriously . And the stuff that makes them retain their shape is derived from boiled calf hooves. Gross. Not only do they taste like fire extinguisher foam with a grainy finish, they look like saliva-coated demon bunnies. After Christ’s crucifixion, he descended to the realm of the dead, where probably he fought off creatures that looked like this. John Milton once said, “This horror will grow mild, this darkness light.” I hope John is right and these demon creatures are cast into dumpsters across the nation, never to be seen or spoken of again.

Louisiana State Police: 11-year-old driver killed when truck hits tree

CULLEN, La.  — Louisiana State Police say an 11-year-old has died after the speeding pickup truck he was driving hit a tree. Trooper Glenn Younger says in a news release that Clark James Davis was the only person in the 1993 Ford Ranger when it went off Louisiana Highway 802 about 4:15 a.m. Saturday in Webster Parish. The release says the boy was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the truck. It did not say why the boy was driving alone at night. Younger says the boy was from Webster Parish but did not give his home town. The crash occurred about 5 miles (8 kilometers) south of the Arkansas state line. He says investigators believe speed was a factor in the crash.

MPD: Debris falls multiple stories onto car near Prospect & Ivanhoe

MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee police say wind has been causing a lot of problems and damage Saturday, March 31. At around 11:25 a.m., police got a call to the area of Prospect and Ivanhoe for property damage. According to responding officers, pallets got picked up by the wind from the construction site across the street and fell onto a woman’s car — leaving significant damage to the windshield. The city closed the street in that area. Police say no one was injured.

Tesla says vehicle in deadly crash was on Autopilot

NEW YORK — Tesla says the vehicle in a fatal California crash was operating on Autopilot, the latest accident to involve self-driving technology. The automaker says the driver, who was killed in the accident, did not have his hands on the steering wheel for six seconds before the crash. Tesla says its Autopilot feature, which can keep speed, change lanes and self-park, requires drivers to keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel to take control of the vehicle to avoid accidents. Earlier this month, a self-driving Volvo SUV being tested by ride-hailing service Uber struck and killed a pedestrian in Arizona. Tesla Inc., in a  blog  post, defended its Autopilot feature, saying that while it doesn’t prevent all accidents, it makes them less likely to occur.

MINGORA, Pakistan — Pakistan’s Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai returned to her hometown Saturday for the first time since receiving a gunshot wound to the head there in 2012 for her work as an advocate for young women’s education. Yousafzai and her family arrived in a helicopter provided by the Pakistani military, which took her to the town of Mingora in the Swat Valley from Islamabad. She had arrived in the capital before dawn on Thursday flanked by heavy security and plans to return to Britain on Monday. Austin package explosions sent bomb squad on 300-plus calls

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police say a series of explosions in Texas’ capital city over three weeks led to bomb technicians being dispatched on more than 300 calls about suspicious packages. The Austin American-Statesman reports  that robots designed to find and handle potentially dangerous items were deployed during seven of those calls. Robots were also used to search the home of suspected bomber Mark Anthony Conditt. Investigators say Conditt used one his own devices to blow himself up as authorities approached his SUV before dawn on March 21. Austin police Lt. Courtney Renfro says the city received a total of 2,500 calls concerning suspicious packages after the bombings began March 2. Authorities had urged Austin residents not to think twice about calling 911. The explosions killed two people and severely wounded four others.

Can Google replace photographers with an algorithm?

Like all mediocre photographers, Google’s Clips camera occasionally lucks into some good pictures. The new $249 gadget, released in February, automates much of the job of a certain kind of photographer. You place the 2-inch high white square on a surface, preferably someplace frequented by children or pets. It automatically captures any “candid” scenes it determines are worthwhile with its wide-angle lens. I spent a week with the camera, planting it on countertops, floors and shelves. Unfortunately my cat and bunny both passed away last year, so Clips only had children to work with. Luckily, my children are extremely good looking. Even so, the resulting photos and videos had a common, soulless look to them. The wide-angle meant they were busy, with too much in focus and no appealing composition. Essentially, Clips combines the hands-off approach of a surveillance camera with the visual style of a surveillance camera. And yet, for a camera that silently watches you, Clips doesn’t f

Hundreds line Cambridge streets to honor Stephen Hawking

Watch Video LONDON — Hundreds of people lined the streets of the English city of Cambridge on Saturday, breaking into applause as the hearse carrying the remains of famed British scientist Stephen Hawking arrived at the church. Some 500 guests had been invited to the private funeral at St. Mary the Great church for the service honoring Hawking, who died on March 14 at age 76 after capturing popular imagination with his writings about space and time. Actor Eddie Redmayne, who portrayed Hawking in the 2014 biographical drama “The Theory of Everything,” gave a reading from Ecclesiastes during the service. There was also a reading by Astronomer Royal Martin Reese and eulogies by one of Hawking’s children and a former student. The bell at Great St. Mary’s, as the church is known locally, tolled 76 times at the start of the service. A private reception was being held later at Trinity College. The service was officiated by the Rev. Cally Hammond, Dean of Cambridge University’s Gonville a

Loyola’s Final Four Run Is Nothing Short Of Unbelievable

Loyola is not supposed to be a sports school. Its football program was discontinued in the 1930s. Soccer never really got off the ground the way the team hoped it would. Even when the men’s volleyball team won back-to-back NCAA championships in 2014 and 2015 most students were still unaware the school had a men’s volleyball team, let alone a successful one. The university isn’t really designed for sports, either. The gym (somewhat ironically named the Gentile Center), originally had fold out stands, barely larger than most high school gymnasiums. The dedicated athletic training center has to be shared between all the teams because it’s not large enough for everyone to practice simultaneously. And that’s it. There’s a small outdoor field tucked into a corner of campus, but being in Chicago it’s inoperable about half the year. The rest of campus is dedicated to academic buildings, dorms, libraries, a chapel, Jesuit residence, and a student center. There are two quads (an east and west

Winning ticket for Mega Millions jackpot sold in New Jersey

DES MOINES, Iowa — A winning ticket for a giant lottery jackpot estimated at $521 million has been sold in New Jersey. Mega Millions says one winning ticket was sold in Friday night’s drawing. The winning numbers were 11, 28, 31, 46, 59 and Mega Ball 1. No additional details on where the ticket was sold were available Saturday. It’s the nation’s 10th-largest lottery jackpot. No one has matched all six numbers drawn since January. The $521 million figure refers to the annuity option, in which payments are made over 29 years. The cash option would pay $317 million. Mega Millions is played in 44 states plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Milwaukee Admirals win 5-3 over Texas Stars

MILWAUKEE — The Admirals scored at least five goals for the third straight game as the picked up a critical two points in a 5-3 win over the Texas Stars on Friday night at Panther Arena. The win pulled the Ads within five points of the fourth and final playoff spot in the Central Division behind idle Rockford. Milwaukee, who has eight games to go in the regular season, has a game in hand on the IceHogs as well. Tyler Gaudet’s first goal as an Admiral with 7:21 remaining in the second period gave the club a 3-2 advantage, a lead they would not relinquish. It was one of just two goals in the game that wasn’t scored on the power-play as both teams finished the night 3-for-5. Milwaukee also picked up goals from Harry Zolnierczyk, Freddy Gaudreau, Mark McNeill, and Trevor Smith as they up their scoring total to 17 goals over the past three games, which was more than they had accumulated in the previous eight contests combined. Anders Lindback became just the 8th goalie in Admirals histo

Ireland gets its first nudist beach

Watch Video Ireland is known for many things (pubs, rain, shamrocks) but beaches and public nudity aren’t exactly high on that list. However, the Emerald Isle is bringing the two together with its first nudist-friendly beach, which will officially open at Hawk Cliff in Dalkey, south Dublin, this April. Steps leading down to nearby Viko Bathing Place at Hawk Cliff are pictured in the photograph above. While the news will come as a surprise to many who  travel  here, it turns out naked sunbathing has been on the rise in the country for a number of years. “This country has had people using beaches all around Ireland for as long as I can remember for nude bathing,” Pat Gallagher from the Irish Naturist Association told BBC radio show Good Morning Ulster. “A lot of people would prefer not to say to anyone, but they would go on the continent to nude beaches or go to nude resorts on their holidays.” ‘A milestone for Ireland’ The organization has been campaigning for a nudist beach for

Braun’s 3-run homer off Hand lifts Brewers over Padres, 8-6

SAN DIEGO — Ryan Braun left absolutely no doubt when he drove a high fastball from All-Star closer Brad Hand an estimated 396 feet into the second deck at Petco Park. Braun turned his head, dropped his bat and began a trot that included a leaping high-five with third base coach Ed Sedar and a few mumbled words, perhaps directed at the San Diego Padres fans who had been booing him just a moment earlier. Braun’s  three-run homer  on an 0-2 pitch with two outs in the ninth capped a five-run rally against Hand as the Milwaukee Brewers stunned the Padres 8-6 Friday night. It was Braun’s first hit of the season. “That was a special one, all the way around,” Braun said. “That rally in the ninth inning was pretty special, facing Brad Hand, who’s established himself as one of the best relievers in the NL, so the likelihood of coming back is so close to zero in that situation. So many guys battled, grinded a bunch of two-strike hits, a few lucky hits. I was 0 for the season, so the longer yo

Bledsoe scores 39, Bucks beat Lakers 124-122 in OT
